Debunking Disinformation: Training the next generation of media literacy instructors and journalists, Year III

Training Czech journalism students to identify and debunk propaganda and disinformation and advance their critical thinking skills. Donor: The U.S. Embassy in Prague

Overall objective: To train journalism students on information verification techniques and media literacy instruction methods

Palacky University (Department of Media and Cultural Studies and Journalism)

 

Objectives

  1. To provide students (as well as interested librarians and social workers) from across the Czech Republic with background knowledge on the motivations and methods behind the spread of propaganda, disinformation, and misinformation.
  2. To equip the target group with a unique information verification skill set built around tools and techniques such as internet forensics, data journalism, and coding.
  3. To raise a new generation of media and digital literacy instructors.

 

Activities

●      Trainings and workshops for students held by experts on debunking disinformation, open source research,  data visualization and analysis, and social network analysis

●      Online training course that features 3 online, interactive lectures per week led by Mark Galeotti, a senior research fellow at the Institute of International Relations Prague, Josef Slerka, a data analysis expert, and Dr. S. Shyam Sundar, a distinguished professor at Stanford University.

●      Weekly mentorship opportunities, project assignments, and fact checking skills development

●      Media literacy workshop for prospective trainers and instructors (comprised of students, teachers, librarians, and social workers)

 


Updates

Call for participants: Transitions (TOL) is seeking participants for a course in information verification starting in June 2019 and lasting through December.


Through training in the latest online tools and techniques, the course will provide future reporters, researchers, and other relevant practitioners with the means to effectively lead investigations in the digital space, recognize and effectively counter disinformation and propaganda and to expose inaccuracies.

 

Top local and foreign instructors will lead a 3-day intensive workshop and 3 sessions of an online course. First stage will be happening between 28 and 30 June 2019. Participants will be required to attend all parts of the workshop including the online second stage.

 

First stage

When: 28 – 30 June 2019

Where: Hotel Olšanka, Prague

Cost: The course is for free and TOL will cover all travel expenses for attendees.

Applicants should be preferably from journalism or media studies, or other relevant fields such as political science, security studies, library and information sciences, international relations or other. But that is not compulsory, the main selection criteria will be a proven motivation to use the acquired skills in practice.

 

Good English language skills is a requirement.
