Photojournalism, August 2010 - overview

Dates: August 2 - 7, 2010
Location: Prague, Czech Republic
Price: €825 / US$1,195
Places available: N/A (course in progress)

Spend five days in Prague learning the ropes of photojournalism. The course is split roughly 50:50 into classroom training sessions and practical shooting and editing sessions. So you'll be learning new tricks and techniques and then practicing them the very same day.

Expert trainers
The course will be led by Dean Cox, an experienced freelance photojournalist who has worked for the Associated Press, the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, EurasiaNet and Bloomberg News. He'll be joined by fellow photojournalist Pavel Horejsi and director of photography Katerina Mala. See the Trainers page for more information about the team.

What will you learn?
By the end of the week, you’ll know everything from how to prepare for an assignment, how to take the photographs, edit them and – importantly – sell them. Specifically, you'll learn:
• How to shoot and edit a photo story of 12-15 images.
• How to shoot and deliver 3-4 images to accompany stories.
• How to shoot formal and environmental portraits to accompany stories.
• How to shoot illustrative photos to accompany stories.

And we'll also cover essential photography skills:
• How to shoot under different lighting conditions.
• How to work with subjects.
• Minor post-production digital editing.
• Using composition to aesthetically shoot better journalistic images.
• Introduction to audio and still image multimedia presentation.
• Using different cameras, lenses and other tools to achieve different photo techniques.
• Delivering images to clients with all necessary additional information.

What equipment will you need?
All you need to bring is a camera. It doesn’t matter if it’s the cheapest camera on the market or a top-of-the range Canon or Nikon. We’ll show you how to take great photographs and tell a story with your images, and how your skills are more important than the camera itself.

How much does it cost?
The course fee is €825 (US$1,195), including accommodation. See the Fees page for details.
