The project aims to nurture a core group of new media enthusiasts in Moldova through in-country workshops and out-of-country training opportunities. Donor: National Endowment for Democracy
Objectives
The project aspires to help Moldovan new media enthusiasts make the best use of online tools through in-country workshops and out-of-country training opportunities, building a community of experts that can spread their knowledge to a wider section of Moldovan society. The project’s goals are to train a group of Moldovan new media enthusiasts in the latest online tools and strategies and to expose those individuals to best practices internationally in web development and online campaigning. We will also work to build a network of new media activists and forge connections between new media experts and civil society groups in Moldova.
Project Activities
Project activities include holding five in-country, new media clinics (with a mix of local activists and prominent guest speakers from abroad); inviting three participants to a special TOL new media course in Prague; and maintaining a travel grant pool for participants to attend new media events across Europe. Over the course of the year, a website will be developed catering to the new media community in Moldova and offering a range of resources. The site will allow visitors to stay informed about new media developments in Moldova, and also enable them to network with their peers about new media seminars, job opportunities, and professional development.

Using Social Media for Socially Positive Aims
Dates: 15-16 May 2010
Location: Aula Magnifica, ULIM, Chisinau, Moldova
More than 50 participants attended a workshop on new media tools in Chisinau, Moldova on 15-16 May. Trainees ran the gamut from civic society and new media activists, to journalists, to representatives of businesses that have an online component. They learned about topics such as monitoring social media, managing presence across social media, network journalism, and crowdsourcing.
Lead trainer Kevin Anderson, former digital research editor at The Guardian, said he was “impressed by how many concrete ideas the participants brought to the training. They had clear plans for how they wanted to use new media and were often looking for practical knowledge of how to achieve their goals.” Kevin also had a chance to give interviews about social media to Moldovan news outlets on the second day of training.
The workshop was held at Free International University of Moldova with support from sister organization MediaPoint Network, which promotes social innovation through new media.
