1. How is Transitions supported?

Our training and publishing projects are funded by donors, largely private foundations, international organizations, and governments in North America and Western Europe. We also generate our own income through the sale of spaces in our training courses and subscriptions to the Transitions Online Internet magazine.

2. Does Transitions have an annual report?

Yes. You can view our last annual report here, which includes a list of our most recent donors.

3. What kind of training projects do you run to support independent journalism?

TOL runs a variety of programs in post-communist Europe and Central Asia that include workshops, distance learning, and internships – with two main aims: to offer practical journalism training and to help participants either improve existing media outlets or set up new ones. For a list of current projects, please see here.

4. What will my donation support?

Your donation will directly support the publication of our respected flagship newssite, Transitions Online, and our training goals. More specifically, reader donations will provide sorely needed funds that will:

  • Pay writer fees to local journalists so they can publish in-depth coverage and features on Transitions Online. These individuals include brave reporters in the darker spots of the region who cover human rights violations, minority communities, and other under-reported topics;
  • Provide these reporters with coaching, training, and editing, improving journalism skills that they also utilize at media in their home countries; and
  • Continue to raise international awareness on the key issues emerging from Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, especially those neglected by the rest of the media.

5. Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Your donation to TOL is currently not tax-deductible except in the Czech Republic, though we hope to have that opportunity available in the future, especially in the United States and United Kingdom. For information about tax deductions in the Czech Republic, please write donations@tol.org or call us at +420 222 780 805.

6. Why does my credit card statement read “PayPal” instead of “Transitions” when I make an online donation to Transitions?

Transitions works with PayPal to process your online donation.

7. Is it safe and secure for me to donate online to Transitions?

PayPal helps keep your data as secure as possible – with automatic encryption for all of your sensitive information and email communications. When you register or log in to PayPal, the site confirms that your browser is running Secure Socket Layer 3.0 (SSL) or higher, which gives you the maximum possible protection. When information is in transit, all of your information is protected by SSL, with an encryption key length of 168 bits – the highest level commercially available. Your personal information is stored on PayPal’s servers and heavily guarded, both physically and electronically. And to give your credit card and bank numbers an extra layer of protection, PayPal does not directly connect its firewall-protected servers to the Internet.

8. Whom do I contact if I have a question or problem making an online donation?

Please contact us at donations@tol.org or call us at +420 222 780 805.

9. Can I make a recurring online donation?

Yes, on our donations webpage, you can schedule a monthly or yearly donation to Transitions.

10. How do I cancel my recurring online donation?

Please contact us at donations@tol.org or call us at +420 222 780 805.

11. Will Transitions rent, sell, or trade my personal information?

No, never. We never use information collected on our website for such purposes.

How Can You Help?

Dear Reader,

We need your help. Twenty-five years after the fall of the Soviet Union, days when so much optimism reigned, all is not well.

Following decades of communist rule, the process of building open and well-functioning democracies is neither natural nor inevitable, it turns out. Indeed, the task is nearly impossible without a free, independent, and aggressive media possessing the skills and determination to shine a light on corruption and cronyism, dig into the issues, and hold leaders accountable.

That’s the reason for Transitions. For the past 15 years, our organization has dedicated itself to nurturing the development of a healthy and robust Fourth Estate in the former Soviet sphere. But to maintain our crucial ability to help reformers, we could use your assistance.

Your donation will directly support the publication of our respected flagship newssite, Transitions Online, and our training goals.

So please, if you have a moment and can spare a few dollars or euros or rubles, we urge you to donate and support our efforts to bring the benefits of a free press to this crucial part of the world.

Thank you,

Jeremy Druker
Executive Director and Editor in Chief
