New Media Essentials, July 2009

16 people from 10 different countries attended the New Media Essential course in July 2009. Topics addressed included blogs and their impact on the industry, making the most of social tools, strategies for online audio and video as well as digital activism and campaigning.

The course also included practical afternoon training sessions where participants learned hands-on how to use social networks, mash-ups, podcasts, slideshows and audio.


Expert Training
As ever the course was led by an excellent line-up of trainers. The week began with Kevin Anderson, the Blogs Editor for The Guardian; Suw Charman-Anderson, one of the UK’s best known bloggers; and Dan MCQuillan who holds the title of 'Digital Guru' at the Make Your Mark Campaign where he develops social media strategies for digital campaigning. The duration of the course included presentations from Douglas Arellanes, head of research and development at the Media Development Loan Fund's Center for Advanced Media in Prague; Sami Ben Gharbia, advocay director of Global Voices; Andy Markowitz, Transitions Online's Multimedia Editor; Dan Braghis, consultant and lead developer at the Networked Future Lab; and Rob Cameron, BBC's correspondent in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Training Venue
The course was based at the Tristar Olympik Hotel in the Karlin district of Prague; a short tram or metro ride to the center of the city. Participants were accommodated conveniently close in one of the Tristar's sister hotels, the 4-star Artemis.
