January 2008 Foreign Correspondent Training Course
by
17 August 2007
Twenty-four participants from around the globe came to Prague in January 2008 to spend 10 days learning the essential skills of international reporting.
Training from experienced journalist
The course featured trainers with first-hand experience working for major national and international media, such as Reuters, the BBC, The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Economist, The Independent and The Observer. A special addition to this winter's course, was a presentation given by a highly-successful photojournalist from the Associated Press. Participants also took part in a real-world reporting project and visited Radio Free Europe.
Social and cultural activities
With participants from South Africa, Brazil, Denmark, Hungary, Slovakia, the UK and the USA, the ever-popular social programme offered a chance to socialise with a great mix of people from around the world, and to absorb the local culture. Kicking off with a welcome dinner in a traditonal Czech restaurant, the programme also featured a guided tour of Prague, a jazz concert, a Friday night reception - where participants had the opportunity to connect with the group of students from TOL’s special Hong Kong Baptist University Foreign Correspondent training course; and a farewell dinner on the students last evening in beautiful Prague.
Training venue
Classes were held at New York University in Prague, which is housed in a 15th-century building in the heart of the city's historic centre. The university is only a few steps away from Old Town Square and close to most of Prague's main attractions, including Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter.
“The course will definitely be something I know will be incredibly useful in the future- the exercise got me over my fear of going into another country and producing a story- the entire course was worth it because of that fact.” Jennifer, January 08
