23 people from 14 different countries attended the New Media Essentials course in July 2007. Topics addressed included blogging, citizen journalism, the future of newspapers, RSS technology, podcasts and videocasts.
Expert training
Led by TOL’s director of new media, Evgeny Morozov, whose commentaries on new media, politics and society have appeared in The International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, The Globalist and other publications; the course featured Robert Cottrell, deputy editor of economist.com, and other experts in the field of new media including Douglas Arellanes, head of research and development at the Media Development Loan Fund’s Center for Advanced Media – Prague (CAMP), Noel Hidalgo, renowned blogger and citizen journalist, and Ilya Vedrashko, graduate in comparative media studies from MIT and media strategist for the advertising agency Hill Holiday.
Social and cultural activities
With participants from around the globe, the popular social programme offered students the chance to connect with a great mix of people, and to soak up the local culture. Beginning with a welcome dinner in a traditional Czech restaurant, the programmed also included a midweek jazz concert in Prague’s historic Old Town and Friday evening drinks at a well-known pub.
Training venue
The course was based at the Czech Agricultural University, located in the Suchdol district of Prague on a hill overlooking the city centre. Students were accommodated conveniently close to the training venue in one of the university’s dormitories.
